The two amphibians were found in late February on the banks of the Louth canal. They are most likely to be common toads, although it's not easy to identify them for certain because they don't have much evidence of the wartiness that characterises that species. They are not actually mating in the picture. Male frogs and toads often hitch a ride on the back of the larger females in order to reproduce. This is called amplexus, and can go on for hours or even days. |
