40s Re-enactment Weekend at the Lincolnshire Wolds Railway

10th September 2006

Over the weekend of the 9th and 10th of September the Lincolnshire Wolds Railway was taken over by troops for a 1940s re-enactment. The weather was fair for the event, which involved displays of World War II military equipment, rides on the restored steam train, and mock battles.

The Lincolnshire Wolds Railway in Ludborough is a section of restored track which made up part of the old line which connected Grimsby to London via Louth, Boston and Peterborough. The steam locomotive does not yet reach North Thoresby, and funds are being raised by the Grimsby Louth Railway Preservation Society to reach this objective.

Re-enacters camped out on the site in authentic 19403 style, using tents, vehicles and other equipment of the period. They included the allied forces in the style of the 82nd Parachute regiment, British forces, and the German 352nd Infantry Division.

Battles took place on the railway track, with spectators looking on and cheering from the platform. The action was noisy, with smoke grenades and blank shots adding to the authentic atmosphere. It was an exciting show that all the family could appreciate.
